The Justice League (2017) is a film worth watching, but I would suggest the Zack Snyder‘s cut over whatever THIS is supposed to be! It’s a Frankenstein’s monster, with many flaws. While I enjoyed watching both versions, the 2017 version was just plagued with many questionable decisions. In turn, it wasn’t as good as it could’ve been, and what suffered in the process were the characters. I’m not even joking when I say that I don’t enjoy writing “the worst” lists, but I feel obligated to do so when need be. This is one of those situations, so I’ll dig deep into this film, ranking the top 3 worst characters in Justice League (2017). Enjoy the ranting!
🦄 Here are some more magical movie lists!
3. Superman
Why did they have to drag Superman into this mess? Sure, it’s a Justice League movie, I get it. But let’s be honest, shall we? This movie didn’t need Clark Kent. It didn’t need superman. It’s like he was in the movie just to be revived, as his inclusion was obviously an afterthought. I’m not the first to say it, and probably won’t be the last. It’s just a classic case of trying to manage too many characters, without having a cohesive story to bring them all together. In turn, what we’ve got in the Justice League is a middle-school project; a half-assed attempt.
The worst part of Superman is his smug and awfully playful behavior, and that makes him feel like a completely different character! Whether he’s fighting the Justice League or Steppenwolf, he has this odd smile on his face, as if he’s about to burst out laughing at any moment. It’s like we’re watching a bad Superman parody, where the actor just can’t keep his laughter in; so this just reminds me of SNL. In turn, I feel like Superman’s inclusion in the film didn’t do him or us any favors. I’m simply disappointed, as I actually like Man of Steel, and deem Batman v Supes to be superior to the Justice League.
Why doesn’t Superman rank higher? Well, he actually has a few scenes where he doesn’t look completely out of place and uncomfortable. I like the moment in the field with Lois Lane and his reunion with his mother, as it felt rather genuine. I wasn’t against the Justice League fight completely, as it was one of the better moments in the film. With that said, I’m giving Supes the 5th spot on my list of the very worst characters of Justice League (2017).
2. The Flash
What type of Barry Allen is THIS!? Which comic book? Talk about just taking a few elements to create one of the most iconic superheroes of all time! Why is THIS version of Barry Allen such a nuisance? He just gets in the way all the time, and his untimely attempts at being funny don’t work in any capacity. If you’re trying to make a 12-year-old laugh, mission completed. But I’m not even sure that these awfully dry comedic scenes do much for anyone. I’m not gonna lie, I was completely taken out of the movie whenever Barry said something, as everything he said was a joke!
Comedic preferences aside, I simply didn’t find The Flash to be a compliment to Batman and the others. Quite the contrary, as I’d say that he was the most ill-fitting teammate. Whether it was his inability to know what to do EVER, or his ridiculous attempts at getting along with the others, The Flash just felt forced into the Justice League. It’s not the same as with Superman, as he was an afterthought, but The Flash was a central part of the story, who simply was not written well. It’s ironic, as Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Cyborg are passable, and some are good. The Flash is the only one who really feels like he should be in a different film.
1. Steppenwolf
There’s nothing worse than a villain as plain as an A4 piece of paper! It’s just appalling, isn’t it? From his uninspired and rubbery design to his ill-fitting voice and poor motivation, this “wolf” just has a loud bark. I simply mean that Steppenwolf is an absolutely abysmal villain. Worst of all, we’re never given any backstory to him, so we don’t know why he’s trying to destroy earth. He’s just literally a “bad guy” and we’re supposed to swallow it, without question. It’s just not a good way of writing a villain, as he needs something to make him motivated. If not, then he needs an interesting backstory, and if you can’t do that, then at least give him personality! No, we get none of it. Thus, Steppenwolf is as bad as it gets when it comes to villains in superhero movies!
The handful of action scenes that are pretty decent don’t save this wolf from slaughter, okay? His abilities are never explained, his inclusion in the film is shallow and his as interesting as a wet noodle. In turn, I’m giving him the 1st place on my list of the top 3 worst characters in the Justice League (2017). Goodbye, good riddance! I’d rather have Snyder cut’z Steppy, than this one!
