Today, I will be kicking off a new chain of lists, focusing on the many great quotes in Jujutsu Kaisen. Whether there are 5 good quotes or 20, I will list all of the best quotes in every single episode in Jujutsu Kaisen. While it might take some time to complete, it’s something that I’m sure many of you will love, or so I hope. With that being said, I give to you the 18 best quotes of Jujutsu Kaisen: Episode 1!
“So which one are you right now?” – Gojo Satoru
This quote is the first thing we hear in Jujutsu Kaisen. What a macabre way to welcome us into a new world, isn’t it? Not much is said. Very little is explained. But what makes it so interesting is what exactly Gojo is referring to? After all, we don’t know about Sukuna… yet. In turn, it sets the stage for a mighty reveal later in the episode, and thus the quote comes full circle.
What truly makes this quote stand out is how Gojo is sitting and smiling at Yuji. It feels like he’s utterly relaxed when asking him “which one” he is… and that’s quite intimidating. Considering that Yuji looks bruised, drowzy and is tied to a stool, you’d expect Gojo to be more serious. But as we find out, our white-haired, blue-eyed, devil has a hard time keeping a straight face.
“It’s been decided that you’ll be secretly executed.” – Gojo Satoru
Jujutsu Kaisen starts with the conversation between Gojo and Yuji, but Episode 1 is actually a flashback to what happened before the two of them met. In turn, we’re not aware as to why a young boy should be executed. It makes for a very impactful moment, making us ask several questions. Like, why should he die? What did he do? Who is he? But when we watch Episode 1 and see Yuji eat Sukuna’s finger, and for a moment turn into the curse, everything finally starts to make sense. It’s not about who Yuji is, but what he became the moment he ate the finger; he became one with Sukuna. In turn, this quote becomes better with time.
“They’re probably tall tales, but I heard he beat all stages of Ninja Warrior, and that he’s the reincarnation of Mirko Cro Cop.” – Takeshi Iguchi
Takeshi is a true friend, who’s making Yuji sound like Superman! After all, he’s a Ninja Warrior champion, and the reincarnation of the head-kick machine Mirko Cro Cop! Right Leg Hospital, Left Leg Cemetery, right? Well, as a lifelong MMA enthusiast, I was blown away by hearing this. It’s just an awesome way of making Yuji come across like a world beater, while never showing any signs of actually being one! But that’s what friends are for, right? To big you up and make you seem like you’re better than you actually are! Oh, Takeshi, you’re wonderful for that!
This quote, in its entirety, is hard to digest. What on earth is Takeshi even referring to? Well, let me firstly inform you that “tall tales” can or can not be true. So he’s just warning us that some of what he will say, might in fact be rumors or hearsay. In the following lines, he refers to Ninja Warrior, saying that Yuji “beat all stages”. If that would be true, it means that he’s very athletic. He then says that Yuji is the “reincarnation of Mirko”, meaning that he’s one helluva fighter! In turn, painting a very complimentary, yet somewhat violent, picture of his friend, Yuji Itadori.
“You don’t have to do anything! You can be a ghost member! We’re the occult club, after all!” – Setsuko Sasaki
When you’re in an Occult Club, you chase ghosts and talk about the macabre side of life, right? So the question is, what would you do if one of the members breaks the shot put world record with a pitcher’s throw!? He did it in-front of you. Obviously, you would feel deflated, right? It’s so-long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goood byeeeee! 🎵 Sorry for singing, but in all honesty, it makes sense for anyone to feel a bit sad. It might be an end of an era. It’s exactly what Sasaki thought to herself when she saw that throw. Instead of asking Yuji if he wants to stay in their Occult Club, she offered him to be a “ghost member”. It’s just so cute, isn’t it? She’s saying that you can be a member, and never have to join us if you don’t want to, but at least then we’ll still be able to maintain our “club” status. 3 members are needed for the club, you see? Thus, It’s a heartwarming quote!
“Grandpa, could you stop trying to act all cool before you die?” – Yuji Itadori
When Yuji’s grandfather, Wasuke Itadori, tries to tell him something about his parents, he puts a stop to his sentence by saying the quote above. It’s simply a way to stop him from talking on a sensitive subject, as Yuji grew up without his parents. In turn, he’d rather not speak of them. But why? Wouldn’t Yuji want to know more about his parents? Well, it all depends on how Yuji wants to deal with it. Perhaps he knows that it’ll turn into a negative conversation, and is just trying to avoid a conflict with his constantly angry grandpa? Nevertheless, it’s obvious that he doesn’t want to discuss his parents.
At a quick glance, you’d think that Yuji was being disrespectful towards his grandpa, right? But that’s not the case. If anything, he was showing some frustration towards his grandpa’s hard exterior and constant angry behavior. It was a quote said in response to the way he had been acting over the course of a longer period of time, not just what we’re shown on the screen in Episode 1. In turn, Yuji wanted his grandpa to “stop trying to act all cool”, as he knew that he was just putting on a facade; an act. Inside, Wasuke was most likely fearful of passing away, and to hide it, he just acted tough and more “interesting” than he would otherwise. In turn, Yuji is saying that his grandpa is good just the way he is, and he shouldn’t change before he dies. It’s quite beautiful if you think about it.
“Every man wants to go out in style, you know!” – Grandpa Itadori
Every person wants to go out in their own image, and not the one of others. It’s a complex way of saying that Wasuke Itadori wants to die in his own way, whether it’s good or bad. Whatever makes his journey towards the other side easier is what actually matters, isn’t it? After all, he’s the one that is on his deathbed, and not Yuji. Therefore, I really like Wasuke saying that. While it’s still a part of his act of “being fine”, he’s still saying that a man wants to die his own way. In turn, he’s telling Yuji to stop saying that he shouldn’t do this or that. He wants to go whatever way makes him most comfortable, and this quote embodies that well.
“Quit snapping over everything. You can just be yourself.”
Just a few quotes back, I said “Yuji is saying that his grandpa is good just the way he is, and he shouldn’t change before he dies.” I’m a weirdo for quoting myself in my own text! Silly Me! But the point remains, as Yuji wants his grandpa to be himself. In fact, he’s aware that he might be gone soon. So his angry demeanor and tough guy personality is merely an act to protect Yuji’s feelings, so that he doesn’t feel too sad when he passes away. It’s the same for us humans as it is for many animals, you know? We distance ourselves from our loved ones when we know that our time might come, just to shelter them from the awful grief that awaits them.
“Yuji. You’re a strong kid, so help others. Even if it’s only those closest to you, just save the people you can. It’s okay if you lose your way, and don’t worry about whether they’ll thank you or not. Just save as many people as you can, even if it’s only one. When you die, you should be surrounded by people. Don’t end up like me.” – Wasuke Itadori
Wasuke Itadori has a small role in Jujutsu Kaisen, but the impact of his heartfelt final words is vital to Yuji’s behavioral change and personal growth. But it’s not because we’re dealing with a loving quite, it’s that these words hold wisdom. His final words revolve around his grandson helping people. Whether he loses his way or not, even if the people he saves don’t thank him, he should “help others”. Simply put, he’s telling his grandson to be a good human being, and be selfless, and die with good people around him.
This quote could be a self-reflection one, couldn’t it? My theory is that Wasuke is telling Yuji to be the polar opposite to the way he has been his entire life. Wasuke might’ve been a very sour and selfish individual, who didn’t help others when he could. Now, on his deathbed, he wishes that he did things differently. Right before his death, he pours his heart out, telling Yuji to be a better person than he ever was, come hell or high water. In turn, it’s a quote about experience teaching Wasuke a valuable lesson of how to live your life. Maybe if Wasuke would’ve helped more people in his life, he wouldn’t have been alone with his grandson when he passed away.
“This is my first time dealing with something like this, so it doesn’t feel real yet.” – Yuji Itadori
Hearing Yuji say these words, as he deals with the loss of his grandfather, is gut-wrenching. It’s such a natural reaction if you’ve never dealt with death before. Finding a way to handle grief is extremely difficult and very painful, so his words ring very honest and true. While the quote is not that special in essence, it’s real and truthful, which is something I can appreciate. Thus, I think it’s one of the best quotes of Jujutsu Kaisen: Episode 1.
“Large pools of negative energy form especially easily in schools, hospitals, and so on. Hardship, regret, shame… The negative emotions of manking become the source of curses.” – Megumi Fushiguro
When Megumi Fushiguro crosses paths with Yuji Itadori in the hospital, he tells him about the “curses”; what they are, how they grow and where to find them. It’s simplistic in essence, but well-explains the “negative energy” and how it transforms into “curses”. In places like schools and hospitals, there’s a lot of hardships, regret and shame. In addition, there’s pain, suffering, jealousy and hatred. These emotions, and many more, contribute to the curse and it’s power. Therefore, Megumi’s simple explanation, gives room for interpretation, while explaining what “curses” are in a direct way.
“What am I so afraid of? That’s right. I can sense death all the way out here. I’m afraid of dying. Was I afraid of it then? It didn’t feel like I was, though. I didn’t cry because I was scared. I was just a little sad. But my grandpa’s death and the death I’m facing now… How are they any different?” – Yuji Itadori
Following the death of his grandfather, Yuji was thrown into a whirlwind of riveting emotions and perplexing thoughts. What’s right and wrong? How should I determine a “proper death”? Why am I afraid? Was I always afraid of death? I could go on and on, but I’m sure you get the picture! We’re talking about a situation that made Yuji question himself and his feelings, and it’s a truly intriguing sight to see. Him knowing that his friends are in the school and that they might be killed gives Yuji a reason to think what’s actually important to him, and whether or not he’s willing to risk it all for others.
What makes this quote stand out is how Yuji asks himself how his “grandpa’s death and the death” he’s “facing now” are any different? Well, one death was a peaceful one, after a long life, and the other death may come painfully, prematurely, at the hands of a terrifying curse. But somehow Yuji is questioning, “how are they any different? This proves that Yuji doesn’t think that there’s a difference between dying a good death or a bad death, at least not before hearing his grandfather’s last words. It’s blatantly obvious, and makes perfect sense, doesn’t it? After all, Yuji hasn’t dealt with death prior to the passing of his grandpa, so these feelings are a result of a brand new experience. It’s just really interesting to see how his brain works.
“He was short-tempered and stubborn. No one but me ever paid him a visit. ‘Don’t end up like me,’ huh? That’s true.” – Yuji Itadori
This quote isn’t special, but it’s honestly very interesting to hear Yuji’s thoughts about his late grandfather, and his final words. It’s like his having an inner talk with himself. Considering that he’s just stating the obvious, about his grandpa being “short-tempered and stubborn”, it’s not like his saying anything obvious. But what is surprising is that Yuji was the only person to ever pay him a visit. It gives us another bit of information about Wasuke, and how he wasn’t a good person. Well, maybe he was, but we don’t know that. All we can say is that based on the info we have, Yuji’s grandfather wasn’t exactly a popular person.
“I think you had a proper death, grandpa! But… THIS death… is wrong!” – Yuji Itadori
What is a “proper death”? Who decides what’s the right way or the wrong way to die? Is that even a question worth asking and answering? Well, Yuji is saying this because his grandfather, Wasuke, felt like his death wasn’t “proper”, as he died alone, without loved ones surrounding him. He’s only visitor was his grandson, Yuji. It was an “improper death”, according to Wasuke. So, with this, Yuji is saying that he disagrees with this perspective. Yuji thinks that his grandpa had a “proper death”, as he died of old age, and lived a long life. He died the “right way”. But I wonder, what’s the “wrong way” to die? Well, according to Yuji, getting murdered by a curse in a school is precisely that: an improper death.
“There is a way to save everyone! I just need some cursed energy, right, Fushiguro?” – Yuji Itadori
That’s EXACTLY was a lead character in an anime would say, and he said it! #LoveIt! Like, do I even need to break it down? Just like most anime heroes, he’s saying that if there’s a way to save everyone, he will do so, even if it means possibly dying in the process. It’s a great trope. Not only that, but it also makes sense, as Yuji doesn’t want anyone to die, as he himself does not know how to deal with it. It’s as much about him as it is about the people he’s saving. In turn, he is doing what’s right for him, but also for others, in the same breath.
“The light feels best in the flesh!” – Ryomen Sukuna
To hear Ryomen Sukuna come to life and say this line, it was honestly quote perplexing. Like, I mean, how does he know how the light feels without flesh? In this question lies the brilliance of the quote, as none of us know the anwer to the question. In turn, he could be refering to his finger, that was exposed to the moonlight before Yuji ate it. However, Sukuna could be saying that he feels things even when he’s dead, almost as a spirit. While I’m not sure which is wrong or right, it’s very complex in essense, which is why I had to include it on the list.
“Where are the people? The women?! What a wonderful era to be in. Women and children are crawling everywhere like maggots. Marvelous! It’ll be a massacre! Hahahaha!” – Ryomen Sukuna
Sukuna gives us a proper taste of who he is with this quote, doesn’t he? From his awfully scary voice and excited expression, he comes across as a horror movie villain ready to pain the town red. It’s a truly horrifying quote, as Sukuna refers to women and children as “maggots”, and he says that they are “crawling everywhere”. What, does he want to squash them like maggots? Is he saying that he finds women and children to be below him? Well, considering that he didn’t mention men, it’s highly likely that he has a twisted view on the value of women and children. While it might be hard to digest, it’s rather fitting of a villain.
“What do you think you’re doing with my body? Give it back.” – Yuji Itadori
It was at this moment that Sukuna knew he has F’d up. It wasn’t going to be this easy to come back to life, and it’s something he had to learn first hand. However, I doubt he was ready to be eaten by someone like Yuji Itadori, who’s genuinelly a good-hearted human being. Therefore, he was caught off-guard when Yuji grabbed his own face, asking Ryomen Sukuna was he was doing with his body? Well, it seems like the King of Curses wasn’t ready for this loud-mouth young man to put him in his place, huh? And you know what, I absolutely love it! Everything from the word selection to the delivery is perfect.
“You’re no longer human. Under Jujutsu regulations, Itadori Yuji, I will exorcise you as a curse!” – Megumi Fushiguro
I’m going to finish off this list with Megumi Fushiguro’s final words to Yuji Itadori. It’s a superb way to wrap up the episode, leaving us yearning for more, isn’t it? But what makes it special is not simply the structure or line delivery of the quote, but how shocking it is to hear after Yuji took control of his body again. I didn’t think that it would end this way, but it did, and the last thing we see is how Megumi is getting ready to “exorcise” Yuji as a “curse”. It’s honestly a great moment, with a quote that finishes off the first episode really well.
It’s time to wrap up this list. I worked really hard on it, so I hope you enjoyed it. This were the 18 best quotes of Jujutsu Kaisen: Episode 1!
