There are many scary characters in Alice: Madness Returns, isn’t there? From The Executioner to Angus Bumby, “scary” things have many different forms. But the question is, who are the 5 scariest individuals in this game? Well, why don’t we take a terrifying trip down memory lane and figure it out? Here are the top 5 scariest, most horrifying, characters in Alice: Madness Returns!

5. Queen of Hearts
Whether it’s the Queensland design, with its fleshy interior and horrifyingly beautiful exterior, I find Queen of Hearts to be quite scary. While there are a number of regular enemies that look scarier, I find this lil’ girl to be a genuine monster, trapped in Wonderland. There’s a sense of a youthful arrogance, but also demonic essence, which makes for a very polarizing feeling. So, when I came across Queen of Hearts, I found myself feeling uneasy. It was managable. But, that moment, when she opens her mouth, with those sharp teeth… and swallows me up!? Yeah… I wasn’t having any of it. I was scared as hell!
4. The Executioner
The Executioner is the terrifying pest in Queensland. With scythe in hand, he’s like Death itself, following you throughout the map, and all you can do is RUN AWAY! There’s not a single thing you can do against The Executioner. In turn, it’s scripted. Just like I’ve mentioned on my other Alice: Madness Returns lists, he’s very similar to Mr.X and Nemesis. In other words, you have to run from him until you can eat some cake and stomp on him! What a way to go, am I right?
What makes The Executioner scary is the way he appears, disappears and reappears without any rhyme or reason. It’s like a jump-scare whenever he pops up, and it’s very effective. While you can daze him and dodge him, his sickening appearance just can’t be ran away from. Thus, he’s one ugly bastard, looking like something out of The Thing. It’s mighty voice echoing right behind you could send shivers down your spine. Let alone, seeing that big scythe swing past your pretty lil’ head! It’s a nightmare to deal with, especially on higher difficulties. In turn, I’m gonna place The Executioner as the 4th scariest character on my list!
3. Alice Liddell
Let’s be honest, shall we? Alice Liddell is VERY scary! From her utter and complete disconnect from reality to her murderous ways, she’s pretty much a lunatic, trapped inside her own mind. While some of her antics can be justified, most of what she says and does lacks any ground to stand on, which makes her unpredictable. It’s easy to say that she’s “the good guy” when she is fighting “bad guys”, but it’s ALL IN HER HEAD! How can we actually know if she’s the good guys to begin with? The game never clarifies that, and to me, that’s pretty scary… after all, if it’s all in her head, she’s dreaming about killing people. If that doesn’t shake your bones, not much will!
The only reason she doesn’t rank higher, is because she has many redeemable qualities. She is, even if it might be in her head, killing people that are bad and deserve it. In turn, I feel like Alice often does what’s right, more than she does anything wrong. That’s what makes her a lil’ less scary to me! However, fear is a central element of the game, but Alice never truly shows that she’s afraid of anything. It’s like she’s more afraid of the real world than Wonderland. It all makes sense now, doesn’t it? Nevertheless, it’s impossible not to include her on this list.
2. Angus Bumby (The Toymaker)
Angus Bumby looks like a normal psychologist, doesn’t he? With even the clothes to match his profession, it’s like he’s clean and dandy! However… sometimes it’s the cleanest of faces that have the dirtiest secrets; Angus Bumby is the prime example. It’s not only about what he did to those children, manipulating them and abusing them, but also his sick and mangled form in Alice’s Wonderland.
Whether we talk about Angus Bumby or The Toymaker, both versions of him are scary as hell. One one hand, you’ve got Bumby who manipulates, abuses and twists the minds of children for his own sick gain. On the other hand, we’ve got The Toymaker, who literally puts children together, practicing horrific methods on them, as if they were nothing but toys. In turn, both version are scary for different reasons. Thus, I’m giving Angus Bumby the 2nd spot on my list of the scariest characters in Alice: Madness Returns!
1. The Insane Children
When I first started playing the game, I noticed a little child chasing me around the map. Head as huge as a watermelon, body as little as a porcelain doll. It creeped after me, without sound. I didn’t have a clue who or what it was, but for many chapters, I kept thinking about him… her. Whoever it was… I was chilled to the core. It wasn’t even explained, until many chapters later. Then, I found that little redhead torn in half, bloody… pleading for help. I was mortified.
Chapter 5 rolls around… and when I get to the fortress, my heart jumps to my throat! I’m really greeted by bloody, and abused, children!? WHAT. THE. F***! My jaw-dropped to the floor! Alice could’ve picked up my teeth like she did in the game, the way my chompers fell to the canvas! I’m not even joking. These “Insane Children” broke me… not only by being terrifying, but by a sadness and gut-wrenching feeling inside of me. What had been done to me horrified me, and it’s the thing that stuck with me, more than anything else.
Whatever way you slice it or dice it, the “Insane Children” were absolutely scary! While Angus Bumby was terrifying as The Toymaker, he was the villain. I wanted to see him suffer and felt satisfaction when he got what was coming to him! But these children? They didn’t deserve it. Therefore, I was even more petrified. It’s like seeing someone hit their child in real life, or an idiot hurting their pet. Taking advantage of the helpless, ones that are in need of help, makes me want to cry. However, the way the “Insane Children” were portrayed in the game… it sent chills down to my very existence. In turn, these poor children take the #1 spot on my list of the scariest characters in Alice: Madness Returns!
