Michael Bay‘s Transformers (2007) is an action-film that’ll leave you happy and content, as it’s filled with explosions, epic action scenes and some jaw-droppingly badass Decepticons. They are deceitful, villainous and cunning. Some are terrifying, and some are very funny. But every one of them is special… different. And now it’s time to dive neck deep into the gruesome and vile Decepticons that made the humans and Autobots fear for their lives. I present to you the 8 notable Decepticons ranked, from worst to best, in Transformers (2007).
8. Brawl
Voice By: NONE
Let’s be completely honest, shall we? Neither you or me know this particular Decepticon by its name, as we only recognize it as the tank Decepticon from the final battle. When you consider that Brawl is mostly in his tank form, it’s hard to even imagine or recognize his “true” form. In turn, he’s only recognizable feature is being a tank and getting blown up by Bumblebee and his friends. With that being said, he’s obviously the worst Decepticon of Transformers (2007).
7. Bonecrusher
Voice By: Jimmie Wood
Bonecrusher is just like Brawl; a Decepticon that appears for a short time, only to be killed in spectacular fashion by an Autobot. In this case, we see Bonecrusher attempt to kill Optimus Prime, only to be torn to pieces by the Autobot leader. It was an expected conclusion, but a sad ending to Bonecrusher; a genuinelly well-designed and cool-looking Decepticon. He just didn’t have a chance to shine, as Optimus Prime sliced him to pieces.
6. Blackout
Voice By: NONE
We first see Blackout as the Sikorsky MH-53, as it slowly approaches the military base. It’s like an animal searching for prey, with its mind already made up; time to feast. It’s a jaw-dropping introduction to the Decepticons, showcasing their ferocious and terrifying nature. The way in which Blackout transformed was mind-numbingly intense, and what followed was absolute carnage! You could call it a total black out. Hence why the name is so fitting, and I love it.
While Blackout makes the opening of the movie spectacular, he doesn’t do much else. In turn, it’s hard to argue that he should be higher up on the list. It’s that simple, and thus he lands on this respectable 6th spot.
5. Barricade
Voice By: Jess Harnell
It’s time for Barricade, a Decepticon who’s recognized for his marking that says “to punish and enslave…” It’s not only a warning, but a reminder of what type of machines we’re dealing with. However, it’s a great way to make Barricade stand out among the many Transformers. It’s also a behavioral trait, as his aggressive and relentless nature fits the quote so well.
While I like the part Barricade plays in the Transformers (2007), his role is too small to warrant a higher placing. I honestly enjoyed the interaction between Barricade and Sam Witwicky, as it was one of the funniest and seemingly dangerous moments in the movie. I also liked the car chase scene and the ending rumble between Barricade and Bumblebee, but it’s not enough to earn a high spot on this list of better Decepticons. It’s that simple.
The best quality: His ferociousness. It’s the primary quality that makes him feel dangerous. When you consider his relentless pursuit of Sam Witwicky, it’s his ferocious and unforgiving nature that makes him stand out.
The worst quality: NONE. Considering the screen time that Barricade had, he was perfect.
4. Starscream
Voice By: Charlie Adler
Starscream is the sneaky and mischevious one who’s willing to do anything and everything for his master, Megatron! He’s the silent partner in crime, who avoids the head on collision, as his in favor of sneak attacks. It’s not all that surprising, as our beloved Starscream takes the form of a fighter jet; Lockheed Martin F-22A Raptor. This means that he’s fast, equipped with heavy rockets, ready to take out the opposition from a safe distance. In turn, making Starscream one of the most versatile and lethal Decepticons in the movie, which is pretty badass!
The best quality: Demeanor. It’s the sly, snake-like behavior, that makes Starscream special. It’s like his a servant to Megatron’s wishes, willing to do anything to make him happy. In turn, his demeanor makes him stand out.
The worst quality: NONE. Perfect Decepticon.
🥉 Frenzy
Voice By: Reno Wilson
Heeeey… Is this a Gremlin? Like, I’m pretty sure that Frenzy acts like a Gremlin! He’s the size of a small dog, acts overly ferocious and aggressive, while being really funny and unintentionally humorous; like a Gremlin! Oh, I might be wrong, but this comparison is only positive, so don’t worry. I’m simply sharing my love for Gremlins, while also saying that Frenzy comes across as a badass lil’ machine creature with a good sense of humor. It’s a great combination, and I’m a fan of this Decepticon.
The best quality: Reno Wildon’s voice acting was sublime. It made the character come alive in hilarious fashion, and gave Frenzy some true character.
The worst quality: Sometimes the jokes were too much, if you know what I mean? Like, we didn’t need to see Frenzy hump Megan Fox’s leg, right? That didn’t really do much for me, and it felt really forced. While most of his comedic behavior was great, there were some jokes that just felt too sexual and out of place. I mean, in comedy, it’s always about knowing the right “amount” for everything. Frenzy was just cranked to 100, and it was something cringey.
🥈 Scorponok
Voice By: NONE
Scorponok is the most intriguing Decepticon in Transformers. Firstly, this machine has an odd symbiotic connection to its host, Blackout. Secondly, Scorponok takes the form of a living and breathing being, a scorpion, instead of a vehicle. Thirdly, Scorponok has the ability to “swim” and dig in the sand, which is unique to this Decepticon. With all of that being said, Scorponok is easily one of the most special Decepticons in Transformers. In addition to all of this, he has his share of badass action sequences, many of which are tattooed on my brain. Like this one!
Say what you want about Starscream and Frenzy, but they are not as special or as well-written into the movie as Scorponok. From his introduction to his incredible fight scenes, Scorponok is the underrated Decepticon who does so much, and a lot of it goes unnoticed. While I might be wrong, I simply haven’t seen many people give Scorponok respect, and I’m here to stand up for this majestic beast. It’s one of my favorites in the Bay-verse!
The best quality: Transforming into a Scorpion. It’s a great creative decision, and it makes for a handful of excellent moments. I’m referring to all of Scorponok’s badass fights and battles.
The worst quality: No voice actor. It’s an understandable decision, but still a peculiar one, as Scorponok is a rather big part of Transformers. In turn, I would’ve loved to hear him speak.
🥇 Megatron 👑
Voice By: Hugo Weaving
There’s no one like Megatron, is there? His villainous ways are laughably entertaining, but his also the one Decepticon that’ll make you tingle with fear. It’s like his a Disney villain, just a bit meaner, and that’s a compliment. With the addition of Hugo Weaving’s voice, Megatron does tick all the boxes of being the best live-action Decepticon.
Megatron is the Decepticon with the most vitriol, being volatile in every sense of the word. Not even his own dear Decepticons, who saves his life by the way, are safe from his ridicule and his wraith. It’s like he’s a walking-and-talking nuclear weapon, about to go off on anybody that dares to go against him and his wishes. In turn, he embodies the villainous Decepticons in the best way imaginable. With that being said, Megatron takes the 1st place on my ranking of the worst to best Decepticons in Transformers (2007).
The best quality: His villainous behavior. It’s ingrained in him. Every metallic sliver of him is downright cruel and evil; being the perfect villain.
The worst quality: NONE. I liked everything about him. From his voice acting to his design, I find Megatron to be the perfect Decepticon.
