Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is the conclusion to Paul W.S. Anderson‘s adaptation of the critically-acclaimed Resident Evil video game franchise. But sadly the only claim I can make about this final movie is that it’s very bad. From it’s unhinged attempt at overdoing previous movies to it’s ridiculous storyline, The Final Chapter is by far the worst movie in the series. In turn, I’m going to struggle putting together this list. Sadly, this list won’t be as good as many others, simply because I’ll be picking the best of the worst. Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy my efforts; here are the 5 best characters from Resident Evil: The Final Chapter
🦄 Here are some more magical movie lists!
5. The Red Queen
I’m fully aware that I’m clutching at straws here by including The Red Queen, but it’s the only character I found plausible for this spot on the list. While the character is barely in the movie, it plays a vital role in it. Admittedly, The Red Queen spewing exposition at every given opportunity, but compared to the other characters, The Red Queen is the best of the worst. In addition, Ever Anderson, Milla Jovovich‘s daughter, does a respectable job with what she’s given to work with. Therefore, I’m fine with giving The Red Queen some love, even though the character is anything but loveable!
4. Claire Redfield
Where do I even start with Claire Redfield? Why was she even in the movie? Considering that she’s treated like a nobody and given little to do, they could’ve swapped her out with any of the new characters. The story wouldn’t have changed. But instead, they force Ali Larter to play a washed-down version of a fan-favorite character, which makes Claire forgettable.
That’s not all, as even when Claire meets Alice, there’s no meaningful interaction between the two. When you consider everything they’ve been through together, you would expect a bigger moments. But what we get is so shallow that it’s hard to even call it a “moment”. It’s just so shallow, as if Paul W.S. Anderson didn’t want any character to outshine Alice? But I shouldn’t be surprised, as that’s been the trope all along, hasn’t it? It’s all about Alice, and this time, it completely ruined the movie, making good characters like Claire fade into the background.
The reason Claire earns the 4th spot has to do with Ali Larter‘s performance. It’s obvious that Claire does not shine like she did in Extinction and Afterlife, but she manages to pull of a very genuine personality. A distinct one at that. Therefore, she’s the 4th on my list of the best 5 characters of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.
3. Alice
When even the main character is boring and inconsistent, you have to ask what went wrong with this movie? Not even Milla seemed interested in playing Alice, with perplexing line delivery and personality changes that made very little sense. In addition, she gives us her most lackluster performance yet, seemingly not as engaged in the project as she’s been in the past. So we’re just left with a mere caricature of Alice, played by someone who’s obviously not interested in playing her anymore. If that’s not the case, then it’s Paul W.S. Anderon’s terrible directing and writing for The Final Chapter. Pick your poison.
The worst thing about it is that I genuinelly like Milla Jovovich. She can do better. I believe her to be a good person and a good actress. But sadly, this wasn’t it. When it comes to her depiction of Alice, this easily ranks at the bottom of my list. While it pains me to drag Alice in her last movie, I just can’t believe how poorly this character was sent off into the sunset. If you didn’t kill her off, then you should’ve given her a proper ending. Paul W.S. Anderson could not even get THAT part of the story right.
Alice ranks 3rd on my list, simply because she gets enough screentime to right some wrongs. In turn, she is head and shoulders above everyone, except for the two best characters in this movie, that are ranked above her. But that’s that. Alice is 3rd.
2. The Preacher (Alexander Isaacs)
The only reason to watch Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is Iain Glen. Not only does he play multiple characters, but his depiction of The Preacher carries the first half of the movie. It’s a solid character that’s crazed by his beliefs and world view, but it’s also the only things keeping him “sane”. While he’s anything but normal, he works wonderfully well as a classical horror movie villain, who’s constantly on the chase of the lead character. In this case, Alice. Thus, he feels menacing and dangerous, willing to go to the extremes to fulfill his goals and duties. In turn, he’s a very entertaining character in this movie.
1. Dr. Alexander R. Isaacs
There are 3 versions of Alexander Isaacs: Dr. J. Isaacs, Alexander Isaacs, and Dr. Alexander R. Isaacs. Iain Glen plays all of them. He gives every version a distinct behavioral pattern and a unique personality. With only a few subtle traits, the 3 Isaacs are tied together in a good way, making them feel like different people, while bearing a few important similarities.
The most grounded and realistic version is Dr. Alexander R. Isaacs, who serves as the final boss in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. With an elegant look, a demanding presence and a solid motivation, this bad guy feels genuine threatening. Add to that a mild god complex, a realistically twisted world view and some badass behavior, and you’ve got yourself a good villain.
Iain Glen carried Restident Evil: The Final Chapter. There’s no doubt about that in my mind, especially because he portrayed two of the best characters in the film. Thus, I am honored to say that Dr. Alexander R. Isaacs is the best character on my list of the top 5 Resident Evil: The Final Chapter characters!
