Resident Evil: Extinction is my personal favorite in the Resident Evil film series, so it brings me great joy to rank the film’s best characters! From Milla Jovovich‘s best portrayal of Alice to our beloved Oded Fehr‘s sound performance of Carlos Olivera, it’s time to list the top 5 characters in Extinction. So can you guess who’s number 1? 5. Lloyd Jefferson Wayne
Just like the Apocalypse list, I’m starting off with Lloyd Jefferson Wayne, and I’m sure some of you are surprised? Yes, this means that I chose L.J over K-Mart and Chase. But it wasn’t a difficult decision, as Mike Epps gave the best performance out of the three, and thus he makes the list!
Mike Epps does a great job being the comedic relief until his demise, and even then, he goes out with a bang! I didn’t expect anything less from a comedic great! However, he doesn’t really do much and therefore, cannot rank any higher. Without much character story to begin with, he just loses out to more fleshed out characters. In turn, he lands a 5th spot on my list of the best Resident Evil: Extinction characters!
4. Claire Redfield
Ali Larter‘s Claire Redfield might not be video game accurate, but that’s the case with most, if not all, Resident Evil movie characters. Therefore, I’m trying to be very open-minded and take this version of Claire Redfield as an interpretation of the character, rather than an adaptation. So why am I saying this? I’m just trying to clarify why I’m ranking Claire at #4, because she’s actually a pretty good character overall. Honestly, she’s not bad!
Personally I enjoyed Ali Larter’s portrayal of our Resident Evil sweetheart because of how she made the character her own, giving her a distinct personality. She’s a strong person, a natural leader and someone who everyone can rely on, and that actually works for Claire Redfield in this film!
3. Dr. Isaacs
When it comes to sheer acting ability, no one comes close to Iain Glein, who has mastered the subtle techniques of commanding the viewer’s attention. Whether it’s the smirks or his body language, he does little things that make a big difference. These things make his character Dr. Isaacs feel genuinelly captivating.
Dr. Isaacs is a great character because of his personal interests and his overall role in the story. It’s not just about what others want, but his own motivation, and what he’s willing to do to get what he wants. In turn, he’s a true villain, who isn’t a lackey. This makes his unrelenting chase of Alice that much more interesting, as there’s a hidden agenda; a game changing one.
Combine Iain Glein’s acting with the good writing of Dr. Isaacs, and you got yourself a pretty good character overall!
2. Carlos Olivera
Oded Fehr plays Carlos Olivera with an ease, making the character feel very relatable and also very human. In turn, Carlos Olivera stands out in Extinction, far more than in Apocalypse. But it’s not just about Oded Fehr’s portrayal, but also the writing, as the character is actually well-written. That’s something I must mention, as most Resident Evil films have pretty bad writing.
So what makes Carlos Olivera rank at #2? Oded Fehr is known for his consistency in acting, and in Extinction, he portrays Carlos Olivera with even more confidence than in Apocalypse. While that’s to be expected when reprising a role, it’s still genuinelly an impressive feat, as it means you’re taking steps forward, and not backwards. Thus, I feel comfortable placing his portrayal of Carlos Olivera at #2!
1. Alice
In the first two Resident Evil films, Milla Jovovich was somewhat awkward, lacking the experience necessary to pull off her character in a convincing fashion. While she did an admirable job, it was clear that she wasn’t comfortable, and that was written all over her face. It wasn’t until Extinction that Milla found her footing, making Alice her own like never before!
This isn’t only evident in her solo scenes and dialogue scenes, but also in action sequences, as she’s acting with much more comfort and experience. Whether she’s killing zombies, cooking crows or fighting a mutant Dr. Isaacs, Milla’s performance as Alice doesn’t disappoint. Quite the contrary, as Milla’s performance was actually impressive, and you know what? I believe that this is her best performance in the entire Resident Evil movie series!
From her dominant presence on the screen to her fantastic action scenes, Milla Jovovich’s Alice is the best Resident Evil: Extinction character!
