Jujutsu Kaisen‘s Gojo Satoru is already one of the most popular anime characters in the world! It’s not surprising, considering his well-written character, striking appearance and unparalleled abilities. He’s simply in a class of his own, in a TV anime where his not the lead character. But that’s the case with many beloved characters, as side-characters are usually more unique and flawed. In turn, they’re more interesting and enthralling, which is the case with Gojo Satoru. I mean, he’s a mysterious character that comes across very human, even though he’s Superman compared to others. Thus, it’s only a matter of time he becomes even more popular than he is now!
The question I’m asking today is whether or not Gojo Satoru will become the most popular anime character of all time?
How Many Favorites Does Gojo Satoru Have On MyAnimeList?
Jujutsu Kaisen’s Gojo Satoru ranks at #27, with a total of 36,270 favorites, on my MyAnimeList. Thus, he has already surpassed the likes of Roy Mustang, Sasuke Uchiha and Izuku Midoriya. In addition, he’s close to passing Megumin, Yato, Hitagi and Kazuto Kirigaya as well, which is quite a big deal! After all, we’re talking about Gojo Satoru passing legendary characters in the anime world. While it may seem unimportant, it’s a way to measure Gojo’s growing popularity, as he’s on his way to becoming the most favorited character on MyAnimeList.
The question is not “when” Gojo Satoru will crack the Top 20, but if he can challenge anyone in the Top 10? Keep in mind that Naruto Uzumaki is at #10 with 70,759 favorites, and that’s a big name to climb over, which won’t be easy. But let’s not forget that the Jujutsu Kaisen manga has only 17 volumes published so far, compared to Naruto’s 72 volumes and everything else Naruto related. Thus, it’s not a fair comparison, but it’s the reason Gojo’s growth is fascinating. He’s on his way to 40k favorites on MAL, with 24-episodes in a TV anime and 17 volumes of the manga. That’s jaw-dropping.
The 100,000+ club includes is essentially MAL’s Mount Rushmore when it comes to the greatest anime characters. So I present to you, the four most favorited characters: Monkey D., Luffy, Lawliet (L), Levi and Lelouch Lamperouge. If by any chance Gojo Satoru hits the 100k mark, it would be downright impressive, but we’re still far away from that. But time is on Gojo’s side!
Gojo Satoru’s Google Search Numbers?
When searching Google, Gojo Satoru’s name returns about 14,300,000 results. These numbers are pretty crazy, aren’t they? When comparing these numbers to other Jujutsu Kaisen characters, here are the results (below).
1. Gojo Satoru: 13.8 million – 14.3 million
2. Yuji Itadori: 4.1 million – 5.1 million.
3. Megumi Fushiguro: 4.3 million – 4.5 million
4. Nobara Kugisaki: 2.8 million – 3.6 million
PS. Keep in mind that we’re talking about Google Search. There’s no way to verify that every result is legitimate and that it is about the characters. But it’s still relevant, as most people use Google when searching, and the amount of results matters. Thus, it’s just a good thing to have in the back of your mind.
What Needs to Happen For Gojo Satoru To Become The Most Popular Anime Character of All Time?
Number 1: Gege Akutami‘s manga and its direction must continue to involve Gojo and increase his role in it.
When you consider what’s happening in the manga, it’s somewhat concerning, as it means that Gojo isn’t a major part of the current storyline. In addition, Gege Akutami stated in a recent interview that the series he/she will finish Jujutsu Kaisen in 2 years. This means that 2023 will mark the final year of the manga series.
Number 2: Gojo Satoru’s mysterious nature and complex character must remain in-tact. Plus, his unique mannerisms, distinct body language and light-hearted behavior must evolve with the character, and shouldn’t be changed.
Why? Gojo’s red thread is strong, so any alteration to the character can prove to be a negative. It’s the case with most gambles when it comes to writing, but Gojo is a success, much like Attack on Titan’s Levi. These characters were never meant to be the most popular, but fans found something about them special and gravitate towards them. But that doesn’t mean Gojo cannot be made vulnerable, as that always pulls people’s interests. Especially with strong ones like Gojo Satoru.
Number 3: Studio MAPPA’s Jujutsu Kaisen anime projects must continue to be succesful.
Like with most popular characters, there’s a strong anime behind them. While the manga series or novel series is their birth, the anime is like their christening. It cements who they are to the masses, and is one of many reasons people from the West turn to the source material. Thus, it is vital that MAPPA handles Jujutsu Kaisen with care, just like they’ve done so far.
My Predictions for Gojo Satoru’s Popularity
MyAnimeList: I believe that Gojo Satoru will crack 40k on MAL following the release of Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie. In addition, I believe that Google Search results increase to 20+ million after the film, that will premiere on December 24, 2021
Once the movie is released, I think that MAPPA will announce Season 2 of the Jujutsu Kaisen TV series. In turn, there’ll be another JJK project coming in 2022.
So, it’s obvious that I believe Gojo Satoru will become extremely popular, and will possibly even enter the Mount Rushmore on MAL. But what do you think? Do you believe that Gojo Satoru will become one of the most popular characters of all time? I guess time will tell!
