Let’s be honest, shall we? Halloween (2018) has some pretty good characters, like Laurie and Karen. But there are some abysmal characters as well, with Oscar and Dave being as good as meeting Michael Myers in real life. In turn, they are quite bad. And that’s going to be my focus today. So join me as I count down the 5 worst characters in the 2018 Halloween movie!
🎃 Here are some more magical movie lists
5. Cameron

I’m starting off this list with Cameron, the cheating boyfriend of Allyson, who’s portrayed by Dylan Arnold. While he’s not nearly as bad as the Top 4 on my list, he still manages to grab a spot for being lackluster. What do I mean? While he does a decent job in the pointless scenes, he’s absolutely abysmal in the moments that actually matter. Like, the argument with Allyson was such a let down, as it was supposed to be a “big fight”, but wasn’t anything but “big”. It’s like his entire existence was just to be a crutch to Allyson, and that’s it? While I’m sure that he will return in Halloween Kills, his inclusion in Halloween seemed unimportant and boring.
I’m not going to lie, his relationship with Allyson isn’t believable because he doesn’t come across convincing. In turn, he feels cold and out of touch in a movie with plenty of better characters.
4. Julian

I’m not happy to ridicule a child actor, but I have to be objective, alright? Jibrail just wasn’t an impressive child actor. If anything, his presence felt disruptive, with weird jokes and really odd dialogue lines. It’s like he was an afterthought and not properly baked into Halloween. While I can understand that you’re trying to lighten up some parts of the story, it just fell flat. It didn’t feel fitting, and it wasn’t funny. Thus, I’m gonna have to give Julian the 4th spot on my list of the 5 worst Halloween (2018) characters.
3. Dave

I just watched Halloween (2018), and the only thing I remember about Dave is that he doesn’t know how to wear a hat. Is that weird? In all fairness, I do remember him blowing up a rather small pumpkin and being a nuisance every second he was on the screen. I don’t think that’s what I’m supposed to remember, right? Nevertheless, I’m saying all of this because Dave was just a really mediocre character; bland at best.
Maybe there’s a reason they didn’t show us how Dave died? We just saw him hanging from a wall, but not the kill itself. It just makes you wonder, doesn’t it? Did Miles Robbins just fail at dying properly on screen, or maybe it wasn’t never meant to be shown? Anyhow, Dave is just a forgettable character. He’s only unique traits are being a stoner and being annoying. Oh, and he has the inability to use headwear properly.
2. Oscar

Admittedly, Drew Scheid did a decent job playing Oscar. So I’m not going to rip his acting. But I’m undoubtedly going to criticize his role as the “goofy dumb friend who’s trying to take your girlfriend”. It’s just a weird part to play, isn’t it? Watching it, I got a really bad flashback to Rob Zombie‘s Halloween movies. I’m simply saying that it felt distasteful and simply unnecessary. While I know that it’s a slasher flick, with many sexual things bound to happen, this just felt so forced. It wasn’t a hot moment that ended with cold-blooded murder. It was uncomfortable. I say that with ten toes down.
Let me just say that I’m done with characters like Oscar. The over-the-top goofy friend that nobody really likes, with an underlying need to get his rocks off with literally anybody! It’s just not a good character trope, and while it worked back in the day, in 2023 I’m looking for more effort. At least make the goofy kid somewhat likeable, so that when he does come in-contact with a girl and gets shut down it feels realistic. In turn, he’s the second worst character on my list of the most abysmal characters in Halloween (2018).
1. Dr. Sartain

What in the world did they do with the “new Loomis”? So, he’s a sick psychiatrist who has the hots for Michael Myers, and he’s also interested in knowing how it feels to kill a person? In my Jim Carrey voice: ALRIGHTY THEN! My mind was not only blown, my jaw fell to the floor. But not in shock; in disbelief of the terrible writing. It wasn’t a necessary twist; as if we needed to have another person going around killing? What in the unsatisfied needs of Oscar were they thinking? There’s no way that this read good on paper, so I am honestly confused by this silly twist. It doesn’t work. It doesn’t pay off, and there’s no logical reason for this happening.
The ironic part is that Dr. Sartian is played by Haluk Bilginer, who’s a very talented actor, with a very good look and great warmth to him. Instead of using those qualities to properly create a “new Loomis”, they spoil it completely with this ridiculous turn. It’s funny because he was a pretty decent character for the majority of time, but that plot twist ruined him altogether. Why is that the case? Because everything that made me like him in the first place was an utter lie to sell me on this plot twist. You see, it was all just a gotcha-moment. It paid off with my shock. I just wasn’t happy with what it did do Dr. Sartian as a character. In turn, he ends up taking the top spot on my list of the worst Halloween (2018) characters!
