Sunrise revealed at the Dai 2-kai Gundam Conference that an anime film based on the omitted Gundam episode 15 is in the works. It’s titled Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island, which is also the name of the episode, from the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam. The film will premiere in 2022.
The legendary Yoshikazu Yasuhiko is directing film, and that should make all of us excited! After all, we’re talking about the character designer and animation director for many Gundam anime. He also had his hands in the 1979 Gundam TV anime, F91 and Gundam Unicorn. Plus, he’s the creator and director of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, and its sequel, Advent of the Red Comet. So if you love Gundam the way that I do, you already know Yoshikazu Yasuhiko. Thus, the omitted Gundam episode 15-based anime is in good hands!
The announcement of Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island came alongside the reveal of a 9-part TV special for Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans. Plus, the Gundam: The Witch From Mercury anime is coming in 2022.

Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island is based on the omitted/excluded episode 15 from the Mobile Suit Gundam TV anime from 1979. Thus, the film is named after the episode’s original title. But why was it omitted from the English release? This is what Yoshiyuki Tomino had to say (below).
“I asked that it would be skipped. There is a reason, but since the staff is still alive I can’t answer it. It’s a long story.”
